About the Program

Surgical oncologists are surgeons who have specialized training and broad expertise in performing cancer surgery, a discipline with a unique set of challenges. As a high volume referral center for the region, our surgeons are regularly called on to perform complex and demanding surgical procedures for patients with:

  • Advanced or refractory cancers
  • Metastatic disease, particularly to the liver
  • Rare cancers such as sarcoma and neuroendocrine tumors.
  • Aggressive tumors such as pancreatic adenocarcinoma

Our specific focus is on malignant and benign tumors of the colon, pancreas, liver, stomach, gallbladder, and other areas of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.  Our surgeons, members of the UCSF Division of General Surgery, also function as an integral component of the multidisciplinary GI Oncology team at the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer, the only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center between Seattle and Los Angeles, and one of only three such centers in the nation affiliated with a consistently top-ranked school of medicine. Our team includes several world-renowned medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, gastroenterologists, nurses and other dedicated health professionals.

We are singularly committed to delivering seamless, individualized, state-of-the-art care to patients. That includes offering the latest innovative treatments such as microwave ablation for liver metastases, minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery to reduce hospitals stays and promote a faster recovery, aggressive and comprehensive round-the-clock pain management including epidural anesthesia, and access to novel experimental drugs through promising clinical trials.

We invite you to explore the site and gain a measure of our passion and dedication to taking care of paitents with metastatic colorectal cancer, neuroendocrine cancer and soft tissue sarcoma, among the many conditions we treat. This website contains snapshots of our ongoing research, links to our published findings in peer-reviewed journal publications, and biographies of our surgeons and principal investigators.
